associated with the AIF in 1918

This is a special tour to remember the actions, and visit the
battlefield sites, of the AIF during 1918.
On route we stop at…
Pozieres and view the Gibraltar blockhouse, the 1st Division
memorial, the Somme landscape before proceeding to:
Morlancourt Ridge where the Australians assembled before
crossing the Somme river
We pass the site of the bringing down of the Red Baron before
arriving at the 3rd Division AIF Memorial.
A short drive brings us to Beacon Cemetery with a large number
of 1918 Australian graves with some interesting epitaphs and
magnificent views of the German positions.
We cross the Somme at Sailly-Laurette and proceed to an unusual
stunning monument at Chippilly of a Soldier saying goodbye to
his dying horse.
We arrive at le Hamel with original trenches and explanatory
plaques and understand the actions on the 4th July 1918 where 2
VC’s were awarded. Here the Americans 33rd Division fought with
Monash resulting in their first Medal of Honour to be won in
this war.
A short distance away brings us to the impressive
Villers-Bretonneux memorial and the Australian campaigns of the
25th April and the 8th August, the start of the last 100days of
the war.
Lunch is taken at the village of Villers-Bretonneux and if time
permits we visit the Museum with its special relationship with
Australia. Finally, we follow the Australian advance to Peronne
arriving at Mount St Quentin where the Australian memorial to
the 2nd Division is located.
